Vessel Safety Checks
What is a Vessel Safety
Check (VSC)?
A
Vessel Safety Check is a courtesy examination of your boat (vessel)
to verify that it meets state and the federal safety equipment requirements.
The Vessel Examiners are trained specialists who are members of
the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. They will make recommendations and
discuss with you the safety measures that will help you become a
safer boater.
No citations will be given as a result of this
safety check. This is not a law enforcement issue. We will supply
you with a copy of our evaluation so that you can follow the suggestions
provided.
When
your vessel passes this inspection, you will receive our distinctive
VSC decal to display on your boat. This will not exempt you from
law enforcement boarding, but now you'll be able to make it a positive
encounter.
Let our friendly inspectors help you enjoy
your time on the water by giving you safety tips and pointing out
possible dangers lurking aboard your boat that you might be overlooking.
It's free!
What do the inspectors look for?
See the checklist.
How can I get a Vessel Safety Check performed
on my boat?
To
get this decal, schedule a Vessel Safety Check for your boat. For
more information, contact our Vessel
Safety Officer. However, no appointment is necessary; simply
come by with your boat at Williams Park Boat Ramp (9425 U.S. 41,
Riverview, on the Alafia River - see
MapQuest) on the first and third Saturdays of each month, between 10:00am and
noon, for your free examination; no appointment necessary.
Or you may make an appointment to have someone inspect your boat at a different time.
