Tips for Recreational Boaters


Pre-Departure Safety Checklist for Short and Long Boat Trips
This checklist can be downloaded as a Word document and adapted for your personal use. Be sure to save it to your computer after you open it.

Passengers
o Does anyone have a current medical condition?
o Does anyone on land know who all your passengers are so that all are accounted for in case of an accident?
o Have you informed everyone about the expected weather and sea conditions?
o Does everyone know how to contact the Coast Guard in case of emergency?
o Identify the location of the boat’s papers.
o Identify where charts and navigation tools are stored.
o Assign look-out positions and other jobs.
  
Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)
o Do you have at least one Coast Guard approved life vest per passenger, readily accessible?
o Do your passengers know where they are and how to put them on?
o Do the children's PFDs still fit properly?
o Throwable flotation device: Where is it stored? Is it accessible?
  
Electrical & Backup systems
o Your battery charging system and switches are in the proper position?
o Do you have spare batteries for accessories such as a hand-held radio, flashlight, portable navigational aid, etc.?
 
Sound Producing Devices
o Horn capable of producing a four-second blast audible for at least 1/2 mile.
o Backup whistle.
 
Electronics & Lights
(are these all working right?)
o Radio
o Depth Finder
o GPS
o Nav and Anchor Lights
o Instrument Lights
o Deck Lights
o EBIRB
o Hand-held Radio
o Flashlight
 
Bilges
o Are the bilges reasonably dry?
o Are the bilge pumps not running excessively?
o Do you have a manual de-watering device (e.g., bucket)?
 
Distress Signals, Safety Equipment, Tool & Spares
o Accessible flares/smoke
o Binoculars
o First Aid Kit
o Blanket in case of man-overboard, shock, illness, etc.?
o Toolbox of tools and spare parts for emergency boat repairs
o Fire extinguishers checked for expiration
 
Fuel and Oil
o Are your tanks topped-off?
o Where are your emergency shut-off valves? How are they operated?
o Check the oil: Is it full? Clean?
 
Towing, Docking & Anchoring
o Is your anchor ready? Is it the right kind for today’s conditions?
o Do you have an extra anchor aboard?
o Is your boat hook handy?
o Do you have extra dock lines?
o Are your fenders ready? Do your passengers know how to quickly hang them in the right place when coming up to another boat or dock?
 
Readying the Boat for Launching
o Blower is on for 5 minutes to get fumes out of engine compartment
(use your nose to check for fumes)
o Hatches are closed
o Drain plug is closed
 
Engines/Steering & Final Check Before Leaving the Dock
o Do your engines start?
o Is there good water flow from the engines?
o Is your charging system working?
o Is the oil pressure good?
o Does the steering work well?
